The Mistress's Daughter

Starting in August, I've been attempting to give status updates once a day using 10 words or less on my facebook.  It's sort of my "10-word-a-day-blog."  I just felt the need to combat the verbose online generation I happen to be a part of.  Here are my entries as a summary of my attempts:

10/18 - "The Secret Life of Bees" - cried 6 times
10/17 - all school party meant kids were a mess; Mr. Gyros!
10/16 - "flip-flop day" - wore no pink!
10/15 - spirit week - "crazy day," got my pink sweatshirt from PTA
10/14 - cheerier than yesterday; all caught up. ;o )
10/13 - sleepy, gritched to tech guy, snippy with students, came home.
10/12 - Sunday in Maryland, G-burg Church, Acajutlas, Mayberrys, home!
10/10 - flew to Maryland, Hung out with Fitzpatricks, Rehearsal & dinner
10/9 - pen exploded in student's mouth - called poison control.
10/8 - school flew by, grading papers.
10/7 - half day off for cardiologist appointment
10/6 - staff in-service day = waste of time.  Heroes!
10/5 - church, calls, and as always - school stuff.
10/4 - reading Brisingr, messing with wikis
10/3 - Friday!  Jose Peppers!
10/2 - foreshadowing stinks, meeting after school, choir concert, debate
10/1 - getting back on top of my life
9/30 - can't update in time
9/29 - Mondays pretty much stink, Heroes!
9/28 - church, potluck, grading, planning
9/27 - walking the arboretum, Deanna Rose, taking pictures, reading
9/26 - 11 teachers absent, not enough subs, low on patience
9/25 - too many meetings, free ColdStone, The Office!
9/24 - long day: a student broke my fishbowl in class, glass everywhere - evaluated by my boss - two hour long class after school - ready for bed!
9/23 - doctors appointment, took a half day
9/22 - I collected too much work = grading overload!
9/21 - church, Chipotle, friends, planning, reading
9/20 - release of "Brisingr," lesson planning, Royals
9/19 - no more conferences!  Royal's game tonight.
9/18 - heart palpatations all day long, 12 hours of conferences!
9/17 - parent-teacher conferences make for long days
9/16 - late start day, mentor meeting, book club
9/15 - chilly weather makes me nostalgic, cherry brownies!
9/14 - sing in church, lesson planning, reading.
9/13 - coffee with Amy, reading good books
9/12 - jeans day, quietly rainy, serene calm
9/11 - I love laughing with my students daily
9/10 - no school today - water main break.  Yay!
9/9 - early release day, emotional issues, ladies gathering!
9/8 - Monday, exhausted, grumpy, exhausted, new furniture!  Exhausted!!
9/7 - going to church, lesson planning, watching birds.
9/6 - reading secret release of Meyer's "Midnight Sun!!"
9/5 - reading to my students makes me hoarse.
9/4 - my sister Melinda has a social disorder. <3
9/3 - not as crazy as yesterday
9/2 - hawk ate baby duck, gross.  ALSO: I hit a car, oops!
9/1 - lazy, reading, planning, love holidays!
8/31 - two picnics, sang in church.
8/30 - Saturday, now I can rest.
8/29 - exhausted, jeans Friday, seminary picnic.
8/28 - "Back to School Night," *sigh*
8/27 - helped the needy, grew professionally
8/26 - Read "Caps for Sale" - yay!
8/25 - Monday's challenge?  Don't throw things.
8/24 - would rather be reading.

Did you pick up on the fact that I like reading?  Also, my Sundays are pretty routine with church and lesson planning.  I suppose I should try to be more original in some of my entries.

In other brief news - I am now entirely off of my heart medicine and not experiencing too many quirky side effects.  I meet with my cardiologist again in December to plan out the next course of action: surgery or extended attempts without meds.

I have blundered into the world of online classrooms and so far my kids are really excited about writing and submitting work online.  Let's hope that excitement translations into work completion.

In my challenge to read 90 books this school year, I have so far completed 21 books.  Some have been longer than others... but I've clocked 6753 pages.  I'm pretty impressed with myself considering all of the other events happening in my life: wedding in Maryland, typical grading and planning associated with 3 different "preps" (and 122 students), after school duties and classes, husband (teehee), etc...  If you need any suggestions, let me know or visit http://www4.smsd.org/katelynnscott/html16557.htm to see my list for the year.

Okay, enough for now.  Sorry about the distance between posts.  I think this is just life...

I've not posted about my own life for quite some time.  I don't know if anyone reads this or cares, but here is something for now...

Examples of some GOOD student writing this time... 7th graders: sometimes silly, sometimes serious.

HUMOROUS WRITING
~ I'm a little suspicious of the new channels we got on our converter box.  We have eight Christian channels.  It's not called a converter box for nothing.

~ I kinda feel bad for Bush at this point.  It's like when your dad tries to build a deck, and then eight years later he has a pile of water damaged, termite infested wood and duct tape hanging off the back of the house.

~ Some people are like Slinkies... they're really good for nothing; but, they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

~ I knew my dog had pooped in the house, I could smell that.  Just where was it?  The gooey glop on my floor answered that question.

~ (A Cop interviewing a murder suspect)
            Cop: did you kill him?
Suspect: No, but I'm glad he's pushing up daisies.
Cop: He's not pushing up daisies, he is dead!
            Suspect: it's an idiom (sigh)
Cop: no sir!  YOU are the idiom!

~ It's really weird when you are standing and you go to sit down and nothing is there... and then people around you laugh because you have just cracked your butt knuckle.

~ I asked a contractor to inspect my foundation, but the only thing I hope is it doesn't have a crack like the one the contractor has when he bends over.

REPETITION OF WORDS:
~ I always play in my imaginary world.  I always have a reason to hope for a better day.  I always run past depressing times.

~ She's always been the nervous type.  ALways having to think out every step before taking a journey.  Always waiting for someone to lead her in the right direction.  Until now, she's always needed someone to save her.

~ Don't count on me for remembering.  Don't count on me for secrets.  And never, ever count on me for telling you the truth.

HYPHENATED MODIFIERS:
~ Today I am not going to help, not going to work, not even going to exercise.  Today is a sit-back-watch-TV-paint-my-nails day.

~ Jana looked at me with a shut-up-and-go-away-freak kind of look, which didn't bother me as much as it normally would.

~ It was 7 o'clock in the morning and I was having one of those five-more-minutes-please-mom kind of moments.

~ I swear, when I ripped by pants, it was an I-just-want-to-disappear-from-existence moment.

~ The food at dinner was a this-is-why-dad-doesn't-cook meals.

MAGIC THREE:
~ She is the greeter at the first door of my day, the small light at the end of a dark-tunnel-day, the warm glass of milk before a long, comfy sleep.

~ I am the rain that falls on the roof, the wet moisture trailing down your windows, the gods are crying.

~ I am original like a parrot in a pack of crows, funny like a pet monkey, confident like the Queen of England.

I have a sponsor child through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. She is from Kenya, and I hadn't heard from her in a LONG time, which was getting a bit disconcerting. I finally just got a letter from her today though, and she mentioned the unrest in Kenya. She writes (through a translator)...

"this year we started our classes very late in February due to political chaos which was on our country..."

But here is my FAVORITE part of the entire letter. I should mention that I chose this girl out of the hundreds of options entirely because her middle name (or perhaps the first of two last names) is Pink!!! My kind of girl. So here is a paragraph she wrote this time,

"I love my teachers mostly because they have made me to know colour pink which I like in my life. I like drawing and most of my drawings I do paint them with pink colour because I believe that anything in pink colour always look beautiful and smart."

YES!! I don't even care about the weird grammatical errors - she is my kind of lady. Pink IS beautiful and smart! ;o ) I love it!! I'm going to write back to her with lots of pink pens and stickers... can't wait!

Just thought I would share. ;o )

Peony in Love: A Novel

*phew* I've now made it through my first full week with students and don't have any major bruises or breakdowns to report.  Last Thursday (8/14) was the first day with 7th graders and last Friday the 8th graders joined them for more orientation stuff.  So this week I actually dove into class expectations, the first project assignments, etc...  It's been hard for me to learn names - more so than last year, and I don't quite know why.  There are still a couple of names I'm getting stuck up on, but hopefully I'll get them by Back-to-School night next Thursday so that if I meet a parent, I'll actually be able to remember who the heck their kid is.  Ha ha...

Another teacher in my building gave me this GREAT 3 foot tall pink flamingo lamp made out of mesh with pink Christmas lights inside.  Also, it moves!  The head bobs back and forth and the wings flap.  I LOVE it.  I'm having my students vote on a name for it over the weekend.  Here are their six final choices (they picked 'em): Todd, Bella, Fiona, Ducktape Debbie, Fabio, and Ricky Bobby.  Ha ha, I don't think there is a clear consensus whether this thing is a male or a female flamingo.  LOL.  I also was given a pair of little pink flamingo earrings today, apparently to match my classroom accessory!

I had a student who came to me today and had created a little pink elephant charm out of thin wire and pink seed beads.  It is so cute and I have no idea how she made it either.  I am loving the fact that I teach kids who aren't too old to give their teachers thoughtful gifts.

Tonight Ryan and I went to a local park where a church was sponsoring a community cook-out and concert.  Our local grocery store did the catering and the food was free for all.  So I got a barbeque sandwich and some chips and was able to listen to some bluegrass while I ate.  Not too bad!  Also, some hummingbirds are finally starting to eat at my feeder and it's so fun to watch them fighting over the nectar.  So cute!

In closing, I've read two great books this week - the first is The Host by Stephenie Meyer (of Twilight fame).  This book came out in May of 2008, but I didn't read it right away .  I'm glad that I finally did because I think it's some of her best writing.  It's essentially science fiction for folks who don't usually enjoy that genre of writing.  Lots of societal implications and interesting plot twists.  The second book I finished was The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen.  This was the first book of hers that I've read and I think I really like her as a writer.  I'll have to keep reading some others and see if this new favorite holds true.

Okay, so that's my first week.  Not too bad and I'm sure more amusing stories to come later.  Ciao for now.
